TNAI Organized a five-day workshop on “Current Midwifery Practice in India: Role & Scope of Nurse Midwives” during August 28-1September 2017 at its Central Institute of Nursing & Research And Elderly Care Home (CIN&R and ECH) premises in Greater Noida (UP).
The overall purpose of the workshop is to update and strengthen the knowledge and skills of the nurse/midwives in the area of current midwifery practices in India.
Objectives of the workshop were to:
- Review the existing maternal and child health scenario in India.
- Update supervisory and training skills of senior nurses for providing effective maternal and newborn care in the hospital / community.
- Explain the concept and new interventions in maternal and child health under National flagship Programs.
- Demonstrate essential skills to ensure a skilled birth attendance and management of complications by SBA.
- Identify issues in early childhood development and adolescent health and strategies to overcome the problems encountered.
- Describe the use of HMIS (especially Mother and Child Tracking System) in monitoring and evaluation of MNCH Programs and data use in planning.
The Course Content of the workshop included:
· Overall scenario of current trends and practices of midwifery and obstetrical nursing
· Current Trends and practices in Newborn Care
· Legal and ethical aspects of midwifery and implementation of prenatal diagnostic techniques Act and MTP ACT
· Essential obstetrical care and its management-Hands on skill on the same
· Partograph and Electronic fetal monitoring
· Practice session on partograph
· Respectful Maternity Care
· Introduction of TNAI’s Neonatal Skin Care Guidelines
· Neonatal Emergencies, complications and its management
· NRP Demonstration and Hands on Skill practice
· Emergency obstetrical Care and its Management-Hands on Skill on the same
· Zika Transmission and advice in Pregnancy & Prevention and management of Perinatal Transmission of HIV/AIDS
· Current trends and practices in contraceptive methods and Hands on skill on IUCD insertion
· Current Government initiated Programs related to mother and child
· Evidenced Based Midwifery practices in India
Participants: Twenty-Five (25) nurse professionals working at various levels from Seven States/UTs of the Country (Karnataka - 2, Uttar Pradesh - 4, Manipur - 1, Assam - 2, Chhattisgarh - 2, Delhi - 13, Maharashtra – 1) attended the workshop.
Inaugural Session: Mrs. Evelyn P Kannan, Secretary-General, TNAI welcomed Chief Guest Dr. Sumita Ghosh, Deputy Commissioner (Maternal Health), Ministry of Health & Family Welfare; Ms. Surekha Sama, Vice president TNAI (North Region) ; other guest invitees and participants. In her address she referred to the roles, functions, responsibilities and activities which a registered nurse or registered midwife is educated, competent and has authority to perform as the perspective of the workshop.Mrs. Sanghamitra Sawant, Asst. Secretary General, presented the aims, objectives and an overview of the workshop.
Ms. Surekha Sama, in her Vice Presidential address highlighted the scope of midwives as the midwife understands, promotes and facilitates the physiological processes of pregnancy and childbirth. She encouraged Intrapartum strategies to be taken care very sincerely for better care. She emphasized that ‘Every pregnancy is important and every newborn is a celebration for the family’. She stressed that nurses should be well equipped with the knowledge and skill to change the attitude in giving care.
The Chief Guest Dr. Sumita Ghosh, Deputy Commissioner; Maternal Health, Ministry of Health & Family Welfare stated that the theme of the workshop is of paramount importance, as the nurses and the midwives are the best key to reduce the Maternal mortality rates (MMR) and Infant mortality rates (IMR). Government of India is very committed to give care for Maternal and Child health (MCH) areas as workforce. Indian government has a vision to utilize the workforce in such a way to achieve the MDG goals. MMR is currently 167 and by 2020 the goal is to reduce by 70. Further she re-emphasized that nurses plays a pivotal role in achieving the set targets, its really a huge task but depends how systematically they organize their job to achieve their goals.
The inaugural session ended with vote of thanks by Mrs. S. Vatchala Dinakaran, Asst. Secretary General, followed by Pre-test and getting to know session helped building familiarity of participants with organizers. The first session on “Overall scenario of current trends and practices of midwifery and obstetrical nursing”and“Opportunities and challenges of Nurse Practitioner (Midwifery) in India” taken by Dr. ManjuChugani, Principal, Faculty of Nursing, Rufaida College of Nursing, JamiaHamdard, Delhi
Inthe afternoon, Dr. ManjuChugani, Principal, Faculty of Nursing, Rufaida College of Nursing, JamiaHamdard, Delhitook a session on “Respectful Maternity Care”.
Mrs. Evelyn P Kannan, Secretary General, TNAI & Director CEP, TNAI given a presentation on TNAI Orientation.
Ms. SurekhaSama, Vice President, North Region, TNAI took a session on Current Trends and practices in Newborn Care.
Day-2: The session on “Legal and ethical aspects of midwifery” taken by Dr. Snehlata Manocha, Associate Professor, Ahilya BAI College of Nursing, New Delhi, followed by Dr. Amrita Kansal,
In the afternoon two sessions were conducted byMaster trainers of TNAI,National skills Lab (Daksh) and Dr. PiyushChandel, Senior Pediatrician, Fortis, Noidathey given “NRP Demonstration and Hands on Skill practice”
Day-3: The day started with session on “Survival health and well-being of Newborn”by Dr. Poonam Joshi, Lecturer College of Nursing, AIIMS, New Delhi.Ms.Jenita,Consultant, National Skills Training Program, Ministry of Health & Family Welfare”. Sustaining Breastfeeding Togetherby Ms. Camilla ContiCertified Educational Training Specialist and Consultant, New Delhi.
Dr. Mrs. Molly Babu, Senior Lecturer and HOD, Obstetrical Nursing, RAK College of Nursingtook a session on “Essential obstetrical care and its management”. “Hands on Skill on Essential Obstetric Care and its management” followed by Master Trainers of TNAI, National skills Lab (Daksh).
Day-4: Dr. ChetnaChouhanCMO, RBM Department,NIHFW, New Delhisession on “Emergency obstetrical Care and its Management”. Dr. DeepikaCicilkhaka, Lecturer, AIIMS, Delhi, took a session on “Zika Transmission and advice in Pregnancy &Prevention and management of Perinatal Transmission of HIV/AIDS”.
In the afternoon sessionMrs. Merlin Mary James, Tutor, Rufaida College of Nursing, JamiaHamdard, Delhi took a session on “Current trends and practices in contraceptive methods and Hands on skill on IUCD insertion”.
Day-5: The day started with a session on “Current Government initiated Programs related to mother and child”by Dr.NanthaniShubbaiya, Assistant Professor,National Institute of Health and Family Welfare. Session on “Introduction of TNAI’s Neonatal Skin Care Guidelines” was covered byMrs. Evelyn P Kannan, Secretary General, TNAI & Director, CEP, TNAI.Thereafter Post-test was given by Mrs. Sanghamitra SawantAssistant Secretary General, TNAIto the participants.
Concluding Session: Mrs. Evelyn P. Kannan, Secretary-General, TNAI took the Participants Remarks by the participants. The workshop resume was presented by Mrs. Sanghamitra Sawant, Assistant Secretary General,TNAI.
Certificates were distributed by the Secretary General, TNAI. The Valedictory Session concluded with vote of thanks by Mrs. Vatchala Dinakaran, Asst. Secretary General, TNAI.
